Murders At Karlov Manor Release Notes

  • The Murders at Karlov Manor (MKM) release notes came out today. I’ll try to cover some of the most important notes here, but you can find the full article by following the source link above.
  • There was no mention of legality for the Historic, Explorer, or Timeless formats. While we can reasonably expect the MKM cards from the base set to be legal in all three, there is some question about which cards from The List will be legal in Historic and if any will be Timeless only. I assume we’ll get a separate article covering these formats.
  • For anyone who hasn’t played with Morph before, turning a face-down creature face up is a special action that does not use the Stack and cannot be responded to. It may cause an ability of the now face-up creature to trigger, however, and that can be responded to as normal.
  • If a creature with Disguise is Cloaked, you can still turn the creature face-up with it’s Disguise cost if you want to.
  • When casting a creature with Morph or Disguise, you must announce which the creature has when playing the card face-down.
  • Once you’ve announced that you’re casting a spell, other players will not have priority until you’ve finished casting that spell. This means that if you’re Collecting Evidence, other players cannot respond at that time to try and remove cards from your graveyard to stop you. This is similar to activating a sacrifice ability that is part of a cost, as the permanent you’re sacrificing cannot be removed in response to you activating the ability.
  • There is no limit to the number of Suspected creatures you can control.
  • If a Suspected creature loses all abilities, it will no longer have Menace and it will be able to block again, however it will still be “Suspected” for any effects that care about that.
  • Split cards have the mana value of *both* halves of the card while not on the Stack. So if one half of a split card has a mana value of 2 and the other half has a mana value of 6, the card will have a mana value of 8 anywhere except when it’s on the stack. For Limited, this will mostly matter for Collecting Evidence.
  • There is a functional change to cards with Suspend (a mechanic present in the MKM Commander decks but not the main set). When you remove the last Time counter from a card that has been Suspended, you may now choose not to cast the spell. If you opt not to, the card will remain in Exile forever.
  • There are a lot of card specific notes in the article, and if you have any questions I highly encourage you to take a look. I only covered a small portion here that I thought would be the most helpful as a quick guide.
