Outlaws Of Thunder Junction Play Booster Early Look

  • There is a bonus sheet in OTJ called Breaking News (OTP).
    • As this is a true bonus sheet, every OTJ Play Booster will come with one OTP card in a dedicated slot.
    • All of the OTP cards will be “Committing a Crime”. As a reminder you Commit a Crime any time you target anything your opponent controls, including cards on the battlefield, in the graveyard, on the stack, or your opponent themself.
    • OTP cards will be legal in Limited, but their legality outside of Limited will remain unchanged, and they will be legal in Timeless as well. Their Historic legality is still TBD.
    • We don’t yet know how many cards appear on this bonus sheet, however the 4 most recent bonus sheets all had between 60 and 65 cards so we can reasonably assume we’ll get a similar number here.
  • Just like with MKM, there will be cards from The List in OTJ Play Boosters.
    • These will be cards from throughout Magic’s history that have been curated to OTJ’s Limited format.
    • We don’t know for sure, but it is unlikely any of the cards from the MKM List will appear here as well.
    • These cards will not have new art.
    • The OTJ List cards will be legal in Limited, but their legality outside of Limited will remain unchanged, and they will be legal in Timeless as well. Their Historic legality is still TBD.
    • Just like with the MKM List cards, there may be some differences between which cards appear in paper and which appear on Arena. As a reminder the difference was only 3 cards in MKM.
    • We don’t yet know how many cards appear on the OTJ List, however we do know there will fewer than the 40 that appeared in MKM.
  • There will also be a subset of the OTJ List with new art, called Special Guests (SPG).
    • These cards will also be from throughout Magic’s history, but they will have new art.
    • The SPG cards will be legal in Limited, but their legality outside of Limited will remain unchanged, and they will be legal in Timeless as well. Their Historic legality is still TBD.
    • We don’t know for sure that the SPG cards will be exactly the same in Paper vs on Arena. All of the MKM SPG cards matched, so it’s reasonable to assume that will remain true with OTJ.
    • We don’t yet know how many SPG cards will be in OTJ. We got 10 with MKM, and it’s reasonable to assume that will remain true here.
  • New to OTJ is a third set of cards that will occupy the same slot in OTJ Play Boosters, called Big Score (BIG).
    • These cards are brand new to Magic, and were originally designed to be part of an OTJ: Epilogue set that has since been cancelled.
    • These cards will be legal in Standard.
    • There are 30 BIG cards in this set.
    • There will be no difference between Paper and Arena with the BIG cards.
  • A few miscellaneous notes.
    • In MKM there was a 12.5% of a Common from the set being replaced by a card from The List (9.38% of the time a Common or Uncommon from The List, 1.56% of the time a Rare or Mythic Rare from The List, and 1.56% of the time a Special Guest). In OTJ this chance has increased to 20%, which might be a card from The List, a Special Guest, or one of the BIG cards. The specific drop rate of each subset of The List should be available prior to the image gallery being completed and will be part of my Play Booster Fact Sheet article for this set.
    • The contents of the OTJ Play Boosters are more complicated than MKM’s Play Boosters. It should be a lot easier to parse what’s actually in the packs once previews start next Tuesday.
    • On the WPN product page for this set there is a pretty thin breakdown of the Play Boosters that includes this line: “Foil Borderless Mythic Planeswalker in <1% of boosters”. This was not part of the product page for MKM, and might not be anything relevant. But I’m noting it here because it’s different from what we got last time and at least worth keeping an eye on.
