- Blake Rasmussen, Senior Communications Manager for Magic, announced today that WotC has created “Through the Omenpaths” digital sets to ensure Universes Beyond set releases will exist on both Arena and MTGO. These sets will be mechanically identical to their Universes Beyond (UB) counterpart and will only be used when a Standard legal UB set is released that cannot exist in the digital space of Arena or MTGO.
- For 2025, Final Fantasy and Avatar will be fully on Arena and MTGO, but the Spider-Man set, releasing in September, will not be. Blake does not spell this out in the article, but it’s reasonable to assume Hasbro unable to secure the digital rights to the Marvel characters, necessitating this announcement. Previously, there had been digital rights issues preventing some of the Commander only UB sets from appearing on MTGO.
- The intention here is that since the full UB sets are now Standard legal, both the MTGO and Arena metas will be able to stay at parity with the paper metas for the same formats. Although this does likely mean that the names of cards will change from paper to digital, no announcement about that specific aspect of this arrangement has been made at this time.
- More information will be available as we get closer to the September 23rd digital release of the Through the Omenpaths version of Spider-Man later this year.
