Magic Online Announces Spellgrounds, Allowing Free Ways To Play Meta Decks

  • Update: Due to technical issues, Spellgrounds has been delayed until May 12, which will still use the Standard format. Legacy will return in a future week.
  • The Spellgrounds Moxfield page is now live!
  • MTGO Spellgrounds will be a way to allow players to test run a selection of meta decks for zero cost.
  • Spellgrounds will run Monday to Wednesday most weeks, and will feature a rotating selection of formats each week. The event will run in a similar manner to a Super-Jump style draft, where you’ll be offered a random selection of 3 out 6 of the decks available that week. You’ll pick which one you’re interested in trying out and then play 3 matches with it, with zero prizes on the line.
  • The decks will be selected from “…recent mid- and Premier-level tournaments…”, so all of them should be meta decks designed to give you a full taste of the format in question.
  • Additionally, Spellgrounds will offer a Gauntlet style event that will run from Monday to Monday in the same format the free Spellgrounds event is being conducted in. The Gauntlet is the same format as the free version, except it will cost 2 Tix *or* 20 Play Points *or* 1 Gauntlet token to enter and will offer prizes of 30 Play Points for 3 wins or 20 Play Points for 2 wins.
  • Spellgrounds will not be run every week, but MTGO will list the upcoming schedule every Tuesday in the Weekly Announcements article, and I plan to keep my Event Calendar up-to-date as well. Decklists for the event will be put up on a special Moxfield page on Friday before the event starts each week. I’ll update this article with a link to that page as soon as it’s available.
  • The schedule for the first four weeks of the free Spelltable events is listed below. For the Gauntlet, the events should remain live until the following Monday.
    • May 5 – 7: Legacy
    • May 12 – 14: Standard
    • May 19 – 21: No event
      • There will be an update on what’s going on here in next week’s Weekly Announcements article
    • May 26 – 28: Modern
