MTGO Announces Two New Limited Formats

  • For the past few weeks the MTGO Weekly Announcement articles have been teasing that they’ve “…got something very special up our sleeve…” for the May 21 – June 5 Alternate Play Schedule, and today it was finally announced that “something special” is the brand new Commander Cube.
    • Entry to the Commander Cube will cost 4 Event Tickets or 40 Play Points, and every entry will pair you up with three other players to draft before playing a single League game. The winner of that game will earn 120 Play Points and 1 Treasure Chest.
    • Additional details will be available next week, but the League is set to run from May 21 to June 5, with a special preview league happening May 19 -20.
    • The article did not state it outright, but I assume this is a phantom event.
  • This week we also got the announcement of the Progressive Sealed Deck Mini-League, MTGO’s take on the add-a-booster leagues that have grown in popularity over the last few years.
    • This unique event will take place over 10 games, broken out into 5 2-game stages. After every two games, win or lose, the next stage will offer you an additional booster to your sealed pool to try and improve your deck. The first extra booster is free, but stages 3, 4, and 5 will come with an additional cost.
    • This specific iteration will exclusively use Khans of Tarkir as the format, and entry will cost 6 Event Tickets or 60 Play Points. Notably, this is *not* a phantom event, so any cards you open will be yours to keep.
    • Once you reach stage 2 you’ll get one additional booster to open and add to your pool for free, but each subsequent stage will cost you 1 Event Ticket, 10 Play Points, or 1 KTK Booster.
    • Prizing for this event starts at 5 wins, but a minimum of 6 wins will net you some Qualifier Points and the article promises “…a big jump at the top.”
    • Full details for this league should be available next week, and you can expect the event to go run from May 14 – 18.
